2014 Scion FR-S Coupe

CHEAP THRILLS The successful Scion FR-S rolls along mostly unchanged for model year 2014.  The Scion FR-S is a great low cost, just $25,800.00,

high-performance 2+2 sport coupe, perfect for young sporty enthusiasts.  Well balanced with superb handling behind the wheel, the FR-S builds on its reputation for excellent driving dynamics and track-inspired styling.

The styling of the FR-S is wide, low, sleek and sexy from any angle.  The front fascia is low and aggressive with its wide-mouth blacked-out grille, angular headlights with projector-beam halogen headlamps/orange daytime running lamps down below and new scalloped hood.  From the side you see flared fenders, steeply raked windshield A-pillars, aero-styled, power-remote sideview mirrors, color-keyed pull-out door handles, spear shaped rear side window, lower side extensions, splayed curved roof, flat rear glass and upturned spoiler on the top of the trunk lid.  The rear features round LED lamp clusters, faux carbon fiber lower diffuser with chrome tipped dual exhaust pipes cut into the sides.  The 2014 Scion FR-S has a very low 0.27 coefficient of drag, easily cutting through the air with a minimum of noise.  It has a menacing look from any angle.

Power to quickly launch the FR-S comes from the high-revving (7,500rpm redline), Subaru derived 2.0 liter, DOHC, all-aluminum, DOHC, Boxer in-line 4-cylinder engine with Dual VVT including D45 direct & sequential Port Injection systems for a broader torque curve and better fuel economy (25mpg/city, 34mpg/highway).  This small, flat Boxer engine generates 200hp at 7,000rpm and 151 pound-feet of torque at 6,400rpm.  Enthusiasts can choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters that changes gears up or down so quickly.  My text FR-S came with the automatic that also includes Programmable Dynamic Rev Management technology that really adds fun to the drive when heading into and out of a steep curve.  Both models also benefit from a standard Torsen limited-slip differential which helps maximize traction by allocating power to the rear wheel with the most traction and contributes to its nimble cornering performance.
2014 Scion FR-S Coupe Engine S
With its low center of gravity and lightweight body (2,806 pounds), the FR-S earns its reputation for great handling.  Up front is a race bred MacPherson strut setup with an 18mm stabilizer bar.   The rear double-wishbone setup features gas-charged shocks, coil springs and a 14mm stabilizer bar for excellent handling capability.  Further enhancing front turn-in is the dual strut tower bracing in the engine bay that increases the front rigidity and gives the electric rack & pinion power steering system a great feel with quicker response from my inputs.  The new 2014 Scion FR-S is tighter than a drum when putting it through its paces slicing through curving roads and remaining very stable on the open highway at high speeds.  I can push the sport button on the center console that re-maps the engine and transmission for faster gear changes; push Sport/VSC to shut off the traction/ESC systems to let the rear end hang out when cornering at high speeds.

Slowing the new FR-S down from speed are track-ready, power-assisted steel disc brakes that are vented at each corner.  Up front are 11.6 inch discs clamped with dual-piston calipers and 11.4 inch discs in the rear clamped with large, single-piston calipers.  Pedal feel is very linear and sure-footed.  Standard ABS, EBD, BA, Smart Stop Technology, Traction Control and ESC all work together to keep me in control when I take the FR-S to its limits or when braking hard on wet or slick pavement.  Finishing off the high-performing dynamics of the new FR-S are the aggressive, 5-twin-fork/5-slim, black painted spoke, 17X7 inch aluminum alloy wheels that are wrapped with Michelin 215/45R17 inch Primacy low-profile, high-performing summer tires that give great grip straight-ahead and when cornering.  The new 2014 FR-S’s driving dynamics are as tight as a drum exhibiting racecar-type handling performance and capability.

The interior is also racecar bred and very simple.  The front bucket seats feature textured material with contrasting red single needle stitching.  The seats are very comfortable and very supportive for hard cornering.  Neither seat is power adjustable to keep weight down.  Straight-ahead is the racecar derived instrument cluster with its large centered tachometer with speed showing in a small window to the right.  There is also an analog 160mph speedometer to the left and to the right are fuel and engine coolant temperature gauges.  The center stack holds the climate control system using large dials.  The interior also features tasteful uses of metallic trim and soft-to-the-touch quality material.  The right-side of the dashboard shows hard faux carbon fiber to give the interior a racy cue.  The leather-wrapped/tilt/telescopic three-spoke steering wheel is sporty to help with quick changes to my steering wheel inputs.  The center console has a circular metallic trim and the stubby, leather-wrapped stick shifter that is perfectly placed.  Behind the center console is an open bin that can also hold a removable dual cupholder.  Sporty cues continue with aluminum sport pedals and scuff plates.  Standard features also found inside include A/C, 6-way driver seat and 4-way front passenger seat, driver and front-passenger sport knee cushions, 4-piece carpeted floor mat set with metallic FR-S logo, a digital clock and multi-info display, power door locks, power windows with one-touch up/down, rear window defogger, one-piece folding rear seatback, hand brake with chrome button, cruise control, variable speed wipers/washers, microphone for Bluetooth system, a 6.1 inch LCD touchscreen display, Pioneer 300-watt total power output audio system with AUX/USB port with iPod connectivity, hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth, 8-speakers, HD radio technology, keyless entry, storage slots in each door, front map light, dual vanity mirrors, remote fuel filler door and remote trunk release.
