2015 Audi A3 2.0T Quattro S-Tronic

2015 Audi A3 Quattro

SMALLER BUT THE SAME OUTSTANDING PACKAGE The all-new 2015 Audi A3 2.0T Quattro S-Tronic that I just finished testing is a smaller version of the best-selling

Audi A4 sport sedan.  Compared to the A4 the length is 10 inches shorter, the width is 6 inches narrower and the height is 1 ½ inches lower.  I am 6 feet 3 inches tall and had a snug squeeze getting into the car but once inside it was fun-to-drive with the same performance, nimble handling, driver-centric cockpit, sporty and luxury interior with the latest in new connectivity and safety features.  My test A3 came with the Premium Package for   that includes the Audi Concert Radio (AM-FM-CD/Satellite Radio), Pre-Sense Basic, Leather seating with 12-way power driver’s seat/6-way manual front passenger seat, Micro-metallic Silver Decorative Inlays, speed sensitive electromechanical power steering with a quick 15.3:1 ratio, a three-spoke, leather-wrapped/tilt/telescopic multi-function steering wheel that felt great in my hands, an alarm with immobilizer, Audi Sound System with 180-watts, 10-speakers and a subwoofer, Audi Xenon Plus front lighting with LED Daytime Running Lamps and wraparound LED taillights, manual-folding,  power sideview mirrors, a one-touch panoramic sunroof with a manual sunshade, rain-sensing wipers/washers, and a tire pressure monitor.  This all-new A3 also came equipped with the Audi MMI navigation system priced at $1,900.00 with an electronically extending ultra-thin retractable color screen its terminal housed in the console of the center dashboard, and a Driver Information System with trip computer.  The Cold Weather Package for $500.00 came with heated front seats, and heated weather Nozzles and exterior mirrors.  The Aluminum Style Package $450.00 on the inside included the Aluminum Interior Package of vent and door handle surrounds, Mirror and Window Controls, Aluminum Mistral Silver Inlays and high-gloss window surrounds on the B-pillars.  These base and up level trim packages was all I needed for a thrilling, enjoyable ride during my seven-day test drive.

The all-new Audi A3 is slated to compete against the M-B CLA, Cadillac ATS, Lexus IS and BMW 2-Series.  This premium compact sedan offers the latest in progressive technology at a competitive price without compromising on luxury, design or performance.  The base price for the A3 with the 2.0 liter turbo and Quattro AWD is just $32,900.00.  My test A3 including the option packages, Single-zone climate control credit of $350.00 and an $895 destination charge was only $35,750.00.
The A3 is a mirror image of the A4 with Audi’s Singleframe grille, steeply raked A-pillars, aero-styled sideview mirrors, a full-perimeter chrome strip around the coupe-like greenhouse, body-color pull-out door handles, scalloped doors, flared fenders and deep side extensions.  The rear features a short lid with an end spoiler, wraparound LED taillights, molded bumpers and nicely spaced dual exhaust tips.

The sporty exterior of the all-new A3 extends inside is where Audi maintains its leading role in automotive interior design and craftsmanship.  The defining element is the ‘wraparound’ dash design which incorporates an innovative three-dimensional inlay concept surrounding me and my front passenger.  The instrument cluster is straight-ahead and easy to see with trip computer and other important information showing in the middle.  All controls, dials and buttons are within easy reach and fully illuminated for safe nighttime driving.

A smaller, compact sedan weights less, 3,362 pounds, which means it is fast, from 0-60mph in just 5.8 seconds, thanks to the 2.0 liter TFSI, inline 4-cylinder turbo-charged and direct injected DOHC engine that pumps out a healthy 220hp at 4,500-6,200rpm with 258lb.ft. of torque from just 1,600-4,400rpm.  All of this power and torque is channeled through Audi’s proven Quattro all-wheel drive system and the S-Tronic dual-clutch, 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting.  So quick, so responsive, so smooth, this dynamic acceleration gives instant grip, traction and road holding capability whether driving on dry or wet pavement, straight-ahead or cornering.  Put the stick in S (sport) mode and the engine, transmission and electromechanical steering mapping is set faster for more spirited driving excitement.

The new platform allows the front wheels to move forward by roughly 1.5 inches to provide well-balanced proportions, supplemented by optimized interior space utilization and an improved more rigid body structure.  The nimble and responsive handling comes from the A3’s fully independent suspension.  The front MacPherson strut setup features lower A-arms, aluminum pivot bearings a stabilizer bar all joined to an aluminum subframe for increased rigidity, and less noise, vibration and harshness.  The rear 4-link suspension utilizes a steel crossmember, a stabilizer bar, with separate coils and shock absorbers.  The electromechanically assisted steering system operates sensitivity and efficiently together with various assistance systems while reducing mechanical drag for greater efficiency.  It is calibrated just right for very quick response to my inputs with excellent on-center and feel for the road.  The electronic stability control also includes an electronic differential lock.  When driving through curves, it can brake the inside front wheel very slightly to help minimize understeer and further improve traction.

Fast, long legs needs strong braking power and the all-new A3 comes equipped for short, straight braking ability.  Up front are 12.3 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers and 12.2 inch solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers in the rear.  Standard ABS, EBD and BA work together to keep me on my chosen path during hard braking on wet or slick pavement.
My A3 2.0 Quattro rode on 17X7.5 inch 5-spoke aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with Continental 225/45R17 inch ContiProContact high-performance tires for a smooth, quiet ride with excellent grip.
