2015 Dodge Charger RT

THE BEST OF THE BUNCH With four engines, four doors, eight-speeds and up to a world-leading 204mph, Dodge Charger has a model that

every muscle car enthusiast is looking for in a full-size sedan.
I tested the all-new R/T Road & Track and it hits the sweet spot for an affordable V8 sedan featuring a 5.7 liter HEMI V8 pumping out 370 horsepower and 395 pounds of torque, now combining the engine’s four-cylinder mode Fuel Saver Technology with three extra gears from the new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters that blasts the car to 60mph from a standstill in just over 5 seconds.  The R/T Road & Track model that I tested features a unique 3.07 rear axle ratio, sport-tuned performance suspension, an electronic limited slip differential, a performance steering gear, performance brakes, a high-speed engine controller, Sport Mode II and the electronic Super Track Pak system to tailor the performance of the car to how I want it to react to my inputs including Launch Control.   This is just the beginning since the Charger has been redesigned outside and inside.

The all-new exterior is spiritually inspired by the iconic second-generation Charger from the late 1960’s, specifically drawing on cues from the historic 1969 model which include the unmistakable Coke-bottle design and scalloped body sides.  The R/T Road & Track includes an all-new crosshair grille with glossy center bar, LED foglamps/turn signals and DRLs, and new projector-beam HID headlamps with black bezels.  The all-new forward-leaning front fascia gives Charger a bolder look and stance, while blacked out front-end graphics create a mask with added detail of elongated DRLs and a full-width grille that enhance the width of the sedan including Dodge logos in the corner of each headlamp.  Openings under the 3-piece LED foglamps help cool down the big front disc brakes.
2015 Dodge Charger RT Beauty Side
More streamlined side scallops enhance the Dodge Charger sedan’s muscular Coke-bottle profile, lower side extensions, aero-styled sideview mirrors, steeply raked A-pillars, an restyled C-pillar all giving the sedan an even more pronounced fastback appearance (moved rearward), plus headlamps and taillamps wrapped at the corners that provide a tailored look and significantly lighter appearance.  Charger’s signature ‘racetrack’ LED tail lamp now features the continuous glowing ribbon first seen on the 2014 Dodge Durango, while its center high-mounted stop lamp is now relocated inside the back glass to center-mount the ParkView backup camera.  Finishing up the rear are a fascia-mounted dual-exhaust system and a new three-piece low profile spoiler mounted on the trunk lid.  Heritage front/rear R/T red badges tell drivers in front and in back that this is a true muscle car, plus the HEMI fender badges let drivers on either side hold back before making a lane change in front of the car.  My test R/T Road & Track model rides on giant 20X8 inch polished 5-double-spoke aluminum wheels with black pockets that are wrapped with Goodyear 245/45/ZR20 inch RS-A low-profile high-performance all-season tires for superior grip, and a smooth, quiet ride.  The Chargers voluminous trunk offers spacious gear with 16.1 cu.ft. of storage space, not including the fact that the rear seats fold flat for even more storage capability.
2015 Dodge Charger RT Beauty Right
From any angle this all-new exterior styling is signature Dodge Charger that is leaner, meaner and bolder.  It is a bold four-door muscle coupe that demands a design inspired by three attributes: ‘pure performance’, ‘aero-dramatics’, ‘and fun’ctionality-all wrapped up in a muscular, athletic skin.  My test R/T Road & Track model was painted Bright White Clear Coat with a roof painted Black Clear Coat.
2015 Dodge Charger RT Beauty Rear
For the muscle-car enthusiast, the 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Road & Track features the legendary 5.7 liter HEMI V8 with 370 horsepower and 395 lb.ft. of torque and innovative four-cylinder mode Fuel Saver Technology that helps the car gain a respectable 16mpg/city and 25mpg/highway.  The HEMI V8 also features VVT to improve fuel economy by reducing the engine’s work by closing the intake valve later and increasing the expansion process of the combustion event.  This allows more work to be transferred to the wheels instead of being lost out of the exhaust port as heat.  VVT also improves engine breathing, which improves engine efficiency and power.
2015 Dodge Charger RT Engine
This powerful V8 is mated to the new segment-exclusive TorqueFlite 8-speed electronic performance-inspired ZF 8HP70 transmission with paddle shifters.  My test R/T Road & Track model came with the new Sport mode II and Dodge’s Performance Pages to transform the Charger’s personality.  Thanks to the speed of its PowerNet electrical architecture, the new Charger can instantly transform the four-door muscle car’s personality to improve performance.  By engaging Sport mode II, I can reduce shift times for approximately 400 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds, increase engine and throttle responsiveness, adjust electronic stability control settings and firm up the steering wheel.  Also, the Road & Track model uses the all-new Dodge Performance Pages, which are available on the segment’s largest 8.4 inch Uconnect touchscreen.  It includes active launch control, launch control RPM settings, performance timers and performance gauges, such as G-force indicators, 0-60 time and 60-0 feet, etc.  Also standard in the Road & Track model is the Super Track Pak that elevates the sport-tuned suspension and braking by adding performance suspension tuning, a high-performance brake package, high-performance steering, 3.07 rear-axle ratio and the 20X8 inches wheels/tires.  New front/rear cast aluminum axles and housing reduces weight and reduces parasitic friction and increase durability with a new four-bolt design.
2015 Dodge Charger RT Dashboard
The new advanced steering-column-mounted electric power steering system improves both handling and performance.  The R/T Road & Track model uses the latest EPS system technology available, which delivers sport handling by managing significant load at all steering wheel operating speeds, power assist curves modulated according to driving conditions and up to a 3% improvement in fuel efficiency.  The performance steering gear gives the wheel added weight to more precision when tackling steep curving roads and keeps the car very stable at fast highway speeds.  An engine bay strut tower brace is located behind the engine and further improves rigidity and steering wheel response.

Handling abilities is top-notch for a full-size sedan including a smooth ride when traversing poorly paved roads.  At the heart of the Charger’s front suspension is a rigid and lightweight suspension cradle made from tubular steel that features hydro-engine mounts to make the interior cabin smooth, comfortable and very quiet.  Premium hydro-bushings, monotube shocks, a lower-front-shock-to-suspension-link bushing provide enhanced control, ride and comfort.  The front SLA setup also includes high upper A-arms, stabilizer bar, lateral & diagonal lower links with dual ball joint knuckles.  The rear independent setup includes five links featuring roll-steer geometry to allow independent control of camber and toe suspension movement for world-class handling.  The rear suspension cradle is the main attachment point for the five link setup.  Using rubber mounts, this hydroformed steel cradle provides an additional structure to isolate the passenger compartment from road and axle noise, vibration and harshness.  Monotube shocks, premium urethane jounce bumpers and suspension links with rubber shock absorber bushings all work together to deliver ride and comfort, while upper and lower spring-seat isolators provide additional damping to deliver smooth suspension engagement over bumps.  The rear setup also includes a stabilizer bar.  The front and rear independent setup gives me world-class, razor-sharp handling abilities while keeping the front and rear flat during tight cornering times.  It’s amazing for a full-size four-door sedan!
2015 Dodge Charger RT Super Track Performance Pages
Big, power-assisted, steel disc brakes are needed to quickly and precisely slow the big Charger R/T Road & Track down from speed.  Up front are 13.6 inch vented discs clamped with large, dual-piston calipers in aluminum housing, and 12.6 inch vented discs clamped with large single-piston calipers in the rear.  These brakes feature performance brake linings for extra stopping power and extra durability.  Standard ABS, BA, EBD, 3-mode ESC, Traction Control, Rain Brake Support, Ready Alert Braking all combine for enhanced braking ability and enhanced control when braking hard on wet and slick pavement.  It really gave me the confidence to take the new Charger R/T Road & Track to its performance limits.  This R/T Road & Track model has it all to make any muscle car enthusiast happy and glad to be driving the new Charger R/T Road & Track-on the track or on the road.
With new retro-modern exterior styling and all the power, performance, and high-speed control that you can handle, the interior matches perfectly with high-class refinement, workmanship, innovative electronics and driving aids not found on any other full-size muscle sedan on the market.  The new Charger’s restyled driver-focused interior features new premium, soft-touch materials, a new full-color 7-inch customizable DID gauge cluster, plus a new instrument panel center stack with the newest Uconnect system with the segment’s largest available 8.4-inch touchscreen display that is cantered toward me for ease of use.  The Charger’s interior is instantly brought to life by its unique premium aluminum-lithograph driver bezel, which enables a seamless, billeted and highly detailed appearance that carries through the instrument cluster and center console.  Thanks to advanced manufacturing techniques, the aluminum bezel features one-piece construction for a consistent appearance from nearly the A-pillar to the surrounding area of the Uconnect system, highlighting all the ergonomically located vehicle functions for me.  Framing the new 7-inch DID gauge cluster is a newly redesigned three-spoke thick rim sport steering wheel.  My R/T Road & Track featured a power-tilt/telescopic/heated steering wheel with paddle shifters.  The buttons to control driver, vehicle and phone information functions are now larger and illuminated to make them easier to operate.  As before, Charger’s popular audio controls are still found on the back of the upper steering wheel spokes.  My Road & Track model also came with Adaptive Cruise Control with buttons on the right side of the wheel.  A performance-inspired all-new electronic T-handle shifter is standard and this fully electronic shifter mimics a linkage shifter with tactile and visual cues for gear location, while providing the benefits of electronic shifting, such as short throws and low shift efforts.  Optional equipment in my test R/T Road & Track model includes push button start/stop, center console with dual cupholders under an accordion cover, storage slots in each door, leather armrest with a storage box and connections for a SD card, USB and auxiliary jack.  Optional equipment in my test R/T Road & Track model includes 2-driver memory for the steering column/sideview heated mirrors/power pedals/bucket seat, ParkSense Rear Park Assist, 8-way powered/heated/ventilated Ruby Red perforated Nappa leather with Alcantara suede inserts, heated second-row seats/pull down center armrest/storage/dual cupholders, 60/40-split folding seats, driver/passenger lower LED lamps, front overhead LED lighting, grab handles above each seat, security alarm, self-dimming rearview mirrors, express up/down front windows, power door locks, Beat Audio Group’s 552-watt amplifier, 10-speakers with a 10-inch trunk-mounted subwoofer, adaptive cruise control, advanced brake assist, full speed forward collision warning plus, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, blind spot and cross path detection, automatic high beam headlamp control, rain sensing wipers/washers, GPS navigation, HD radio, Uconnect 8.4 inch touchscreen AM-FM-SX/BT/NAV, SiriusXM traffic/weather, one-touch power sunroof, rear passenger’s reading lamps, remote capless fuel filler door, remote trunk release, lighted trunk and front/rear floor mats.
Standard safety features include advanced multi-stage front airbags, supplemental front seat-mounted side airbags, supplemental side-curtain front/rear airbags, 5-3-point safety belts with front pretensioners/load limiters, Hill Start Assist, automatic headlamps, keyless Enter ‘N Go, LATCH system for child seats, Sentry Key Theft Deterrent system, and a full tire pressure monitor system.  New for 2015, 9-1-1 call/Assist Call connects occupants directly with emergency-service providers via built-in data connection with a push of a button located on the lower part of the rearview mirror.
The new 2015 Dodge Charger gives the muscle car enthusiast a choice of four engines from 306hp to 707hp.  The R/T Road & Track model that I tested hits the sweet spot for overall fun-to-drive experiences, fuel efficiency and price, with the latest in high-performance technology, connectivity, luxury and safety.
